[review]
IAMTHEMORNING is a progressive, chamber band formed in 2010 by Marjana Semkina and pianist Gleb Kolyadin based out of St. Petersburg, Russia.
‘Lighthouse’ is set for release in early April and features a strong, intricate piano base provided by Gleb Kolyadin and is mixed with slightly off tempo drumming, trumpet and aggressive bass lines. It also has an ambient almost ethereal quality to it thanks to the whispery, operatic vocals of Marjana Semkina. This light atmospheric sound however, doesn’t prevent it from showcasing it’s darker, deeper, more mysterious undertones as highlighted in track ‘Clear Clearer’.
Very theatrical, in both production and storytelling, this is clearly a band who likes to have fun and use all tools at their disposal. Playing with various musical elements and styles they often feature accompanying sounds of wind or waves throughout.
As the album progresses you can start to sense a strong , solid Jazz influence. This is particularly showcased in ‘Matches’ which also features some really fun electric guitar, creating an upbeat track with some urgency.
Overall I think this album is a very dedicated effort. it’s consistent in it’s approach, artistic and expressive. If you’re the adventurous type and looking for something out of the comfort zone, then this is for you.
