[review]
Birmingham, UK’s Virgil and the Accelerators are set to release their 2nd studio album ‘Army Of Three‘ this 6 October, and I was fortunate enough to be offered the chance to preview it. After a successful Kickstarter campaign, the trio managed to get the record produced by the legendary Chris Tsangarides (Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Anvil) and it shows. Presenting a combination of modern classic rock with a twist of blues, it’s a surprising mature sounding effort for an album created by three men barely out of their teens.
Virgil McMahon‘s vocals are controlled and decisive, showcasing signs of the same precision that his arena rock idols before him did. Starting with the 6 min relentless ‘Take Me Higher‘ the album showcases throughout it’s entirety strong instrumentals and musicianship. I especially found this to be the case with their lead single ‘All Night Long‘ tied together by Jack Alexander Timmis’ strong, hammering, consistent bassline, it’s raw, loud and full of energy. With some light, intricate cymbal work from Gabriel McMahon ‘Free‘ manages to come across as pretty decent, soulful ballad complete with a long guitar laden intro and a vocally powerful corus.
All in all, I think this is a really mature effort, and I’m interested in watching this band continue to grow and create.
The trio just started their nationwide UK tour on September 29th at the Borderline, London so be sure to look for dates in your area, and make it out to a show.
