Arctic Monkeys’ highly anticipated new album doesn’t disappoint expectations. The British band is back with a coherent work that is a fusion of their trademark rock with some R&B, where guitars meet synths and organs. The worldwide acclaimed album has already been nominated for the Mercury Awards and many have already defined it as a decade-defining classic. While this might be arguable, it is no secret that AM’s deep structure and intriguing lyrics reward repeated listens. From the first addictive single Do I Wanna Know, the listener is put in the mood for the rest of the whole album: a dark, gritty, sexy crescendo. If anything, AM is the proof that Arctic Monkeys are quite free to space from glam rock (a special mention for the glam track N.1 Party Anthem that reminds of the early David Bowie) to R&B with one of the album’s best tracks, Fireside, where the amazing baseline and the falsetto take us far from indie rock style for a moment. Arctic Monkeys are back and while they’ve slightly distanced themselves from the early works, it’s good to see they managed to mix different styles without really losing their own trademark.
