CD Review: Hey! Hello! by Hey! Hello!

[review]

From the maniacal mind of musical mental-case Ginger Wildheart, Hey! Hello! Sees him collaborating with New York singer Victoria Liedtke in the creation of a feel-good rock ‘n’ roll romp. Wildheart plays every instrument on this album, and shows his ability to manage multiple layers of instrumental co-ordination, creating a cohesive sound throughout the album’s runtime. Bouncy, driven and upbeat, Liedtke’s cheeky singing style gives the record an attitude that somehow manages to be both high octane and suitably chill. It’s perfect for partying the night away, or reclining in a sun chair with an ice cold drink, though Ginger’s occasionally sinister lyrics give off a whiff that there might be some darker meaning lurking beneath some of these seemingly innocent beach party anthems. A fun listen from start to finish, Hey! Hello! is a good laugh that hits the spot in just the right way.

As a university fresher in the big world, curiosity brought me to the local rock & metal bar, where for the first time I heard the likes of Metallica, Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Pantera and Slayer. Since then I’ve played as a rock DJ across the midlands, hosted my own radio show, seen dozens of bands at concerts and festivals, and become an entirely better person because of the influence of music, as my library continues to expand and diversify. Other favourites include Black Sabbath, Dio, Queen, David Bowie, The Clash, Sex Pistols, Led Zeppelin, ZZ Top, The Who, Nine Inch Nails, Rammstein, Depeche Mode, The Prodigy, Nightwish, Danzig, Brendon Small, Devin Townsend, Testament, Emperor, Morbid Angel, Napalm Death, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Neil Diamond and countless others, though I’ll listen to anything that sparks an opinion. Cheers and horns up!
