[review]
Reformed and resurrected after disbanding back in the 80’s, Human Remains releases Hell’s previously unpublished demo songs as brand new studio recordings, and what a release it is. This album is chock-full of thundering riffs and face-melting solos. These old school anthems are presented in a crisp modern production which creates a dark and demonic soundscape. David Bower takes the reins of former vocalist Dave Halliday, who tragically committed suicide in ‘87, and brings a career of theatre performance to the table, delivering in spades. His voice is powerful, harrowing, and his pitch control is unmatched. His theatre training also makes him one of the finest live performers in metal today. Had this album sealed an official release back when it had been intended, this band could have easily joined the ranks of Venom and Mercyful Fate as founding fathers of extreme metal, in particular black metal. Although it isn’t necessarily ground-breaking today, Human Remains is a thoroughly entertaining and fantastically executed release, bringing a bolt of old school heavy metal majesty into the 21st century.
