He has directed Lana del Rey’s video “Born To Die”, was nominated for Best Music Video Grammy with his “Run Boy Run” and Kendrik Lamar featured on his “Iron” track from the “Iron” EP. Yoann Lemoine, a.k.a. Woodkid, debuted this year with his first solo work, a mix of multi-instrumentalism, piano riffs, crashing drums, electronic sounds and vocals that remind of Antony Hegarty. Starting from the opening title track and the spaghetti western “The Great Escape”, “The Golden Age” could as well be a soundtrack to a fairy tale, the exquisite orchestral pop of pieces like “I love you” developing on dramas, triumphs and fantasy rides. “Boat Song” and “Where I Live” are the exceptions to the musical maximalism of the rest of the album: here Lemoine proves he can go deeper into the minimalism of vocals and piano and less into the magniloquence of multi-instrumentalism. Either way, his musical works sound compelling and entertaining, just like his videos.
