DVD Review: Messiah Complex by Russell Brand

[review]

It’s been 4 years since Russell Brand released his last stand up DVD “Scandalous” in 2009. Since then he has been busy pursuing his film career, had a brief go at marriage to Katie Perry which unsurprisingly ended very quickly in divorce and, raising awareness for Drug Addicts by visiting Parliament and putting the case that Drug Addiction is an Illness not a crime. So I was eager and excited to see that Russell had returned to Live Stand Up and was curious to see how much his style had been influenced by his aforementioned excursions. Well, fear not Brand fans, for his latest show is now available on DVD and you will be able to see for yourselves that Russell Brand is still very much at the top of his game, edgier than ever and guaranteed hearty belly laughs throughout! The concept of the MESSIAH COMPLEX is that Russell has chosen 4 Iconic leaders, Ghandi, Che Guevara, Malcolm X and Jesus Christ and, during the course of the show, he relates information about them, reveals something about them that is less than iconic and then compares himself to them!! It is brilliantly constructed, highly educational and side splittingly funny all at the same time. Russell has lost none of his swagger, dutifully patrolling the packed house for potential female partners for a post gig “liaison”, while taking the rise out of celebrity guests, Morrisey and Gary Lineker. “Tell me Gary…did you buy these seats yourself or did Peter Beardsley, buy the tickets, set it all up and at the last minute you swooped in and grabbed the glory?!!!” During the course of the show Hitler gets a name check as does David Cameron, while an attention-seeking heckler finds they’ve bitten off more than they can chew when they try to upstage Brand. This is without a doubt Russell Brand’s funniest DVD to date and I highly recommend it.

Hi my name is Mark Storey and it all started for me the very second I saw Alice Cooper doing Schools Out on the now defunct Top of the Pops…I was hooked on Rock n Roll especially the down n dirty Detroit Rock that was so prolific in the 70′s. I worked as a journalist in the 80′s for a fortnightly publication called “Music” where I reviewed and interviewed a lot of my heroes..Ted Nugent, Mitch Ryder, Brian May, Ian Anderson and it was good fun!!! These days I’m in 2 bands, M.S.P. an original Rock band where I am working with a guitarist and drummer who live in Indonesia and our debut album is due for completion very soon and I also sing and play Blues Harp in a covers band One Night Stand who gig regularly. Rock music has been my life and still is, it’s got me through good times and bad and never fails to fire me up…as long as it’s good that is!!! LOL!!! Pleased to meet ya!!!
