Franz Ferdinand’s new single marks an exciting new direction for the band.
How does a band survive the mid 2000s graveyard of guitar music? They adapt. Cue Always Ascending. The first single from the bands forthcoming album of the same name shows the Glasgow five piece at their most experimental. Always Ascending is a venture into a more electronic sound, combining elements of disco and techno with the classic and distinct Franz Ferdinand sound.
The song is fun, upbeat and generally exciting, with Alex Kapranos maintaining the classic lyrical wit that he’s known for. The song begins with a soft ascending piano but very quickly descends into a full throttle attack of maddening synthesisers which continue throughout the rest of the track.
The band themselves are calling this the start of Franz Ferdinand 2.0 and after hearing Always Ascending it’s easy to understand why. The band recorded Always Ascending with producer Phillipe Zdar in studios in both Paris and London.
The album is set to be released on the 9th February 2018 on Domino Records and the bad will be embarking on an extensive tour at the start of next year in support of the album.
