Pre-Review: Steve Hackett’s Genesis Revisited II, Live at Royal Albert Hall

[review]

Next June 30th will finally see the release of Steve Hackett‘s Genesis Revisited II: Live at Royal Albert Hall. The CD/DVD package – also available in a limited edition 2CD/2DVDBluRay edition – captures Hackett’s October 2013 sold out show in one of London’s most legendary venues, recorded in 5.1 Surround during his acclaimed tribute tour to one of the greatest bands the world has ever known.

MORE: OUR INTERVIEW WITH STEVE HACKETT

With pieces like Firth of Fifth – taken from what is Genesis’ universally most acclaimed album Selling England by the Pound – being one of the most precious diamonds on the album, this CD/DVD package is a must have not only – and obviously – for Genesis’ fans. The exceptional live execution of legendary songs such as Dance on the Volcano, Dancing with the Moonlit Knight, The Return of the Giant Hogweed or I Know What I Like, to name some, is a gift for all those who were too young or simply didn’t have a chance to see the original band back in the 70s – as if this wasn’t enough for every music fan to drool on, Hackett has announced more UK live dates in October and November 2014. It is obviously missing Peter Gabriel‘s voice and charisma, but on the other hand Hackett surrounded himself with incredible musicians, including keyboardist Roger King (Gary Moore, Snoop Dog, Jamelia), Gary O’Toole (Chrissie Hynde, Kylie Minogue) on drums, percussion and vocals, Rob Townsend (Eddie Henderson, Bill Bruford, Django Bates) on sax, flute and percussion, Lee Pomeroy (Rick Wakeman, Take That) on bass, and Nad Sylvan (Abbas’s Michael B Tretow) on vocals.

Genesis’ music is technically quite complicated so it goes without saying that few live albums can be so compelling and addictive, especially considering Hackett’s mastery in playing the guitar as a magician who plays tricks to the audience, in addition to the fact that the audio quality is excellent beyond expectations.
