Since their first single Stained was released back in 2016, HMLTD have released a steady stream of singles and a pretty solid EP however new single Flex is the band doing what they do best.
The vocals on Flex are a duet between lead vocalist Henry Spychalski and female newcomer Xvoto.Delete, imagine Islands in the Stream drenched in intense paranoia and narcissism and you get the idea of this song. The song feels manic but yet still very well arranged, with a brilliant catchy chorus that directly contrasts the dark instrumentation of the song, that musically touches on elements of hip hop, industrial, goth and pop.
HMLTD are becoming masters of crafting a song that belongs in the seedy underbelly of popular music, Flex as a song specifically seems to glorify a type of sleazy sexualisation, through a parade of lyrics about wanting to see somebody flex, ‘All the boys wanna touch ya, touch ya and flex, ooh and flex’.
At times HMLTD’s music can be abrasive or even appear dirty but it is in that sound that the band continue to strive, their particular brand of genre spanning anti pop is what gives them their edge, a sound so out there that you can’t help but pay attention and with singles as strong as Flex the band are surely on the verge of blowing up.
