It’s good to see that England is giving birth to more and more excellent raw talents that could possibly save the future of pop music. From James Blake to London Grammar, from Indiana to Daughter, the last couple of years have seen a succession of talented young artists coming up with a personality that has little to do with today’s mainstream pop.
Newcomer Laura Doggett seems destined to deserve her spot in this group of talented young artists who are taking pop back to a level where the artist is more connected to music and feelings.
We were lucky enough to attend one of her very first live shows on the occasion of her gig at the legendary House of St. Barnabas in Central London on November 19, 2014. The place alone plays a pivotal role in creating the atmosphere the audience breaths during a show, so it goes without saying that being in the small chapel set us in the mood for a night that smelt like something very mystical.
Accompanied by her three musicians who alternatively played two keyboards, the cajon, the cello and the electric guitar, Doggett walked on stage wearing a white long outfit that perfectly matched the surroundings. Visibly very shy, she lost herself in the music as the first notes hit the speakers. Doggett’s deep ethereal voice was mesmerising to experience, she sounds and looks coherent in radiating her sensitiveness to the public. The apparently easy structure of her songs is very well compensated by a choice of elegant arrangements, intelligent lyrics and her astonishingly interpretive ability.
With no album out yet, she went through a set list of only 10 songs, all of which we hope are going to be included in a new release soon, closing with her latest single Moonshine (now available on iTunes here). Phoenix, the song that deservedly brought her to the surface with over 100k Soundcloud plays, was the top moment of the evening, as her warm performance of this song never fails to mind-blow me.
A little genius with a world of powerful emotions to convey, Laura Doggett is certainly one to watch. Definitely highly recommended.
