Q&A with To Be Frank

Suffolk-based Hackney-born singer, producer and multi-instrumentalist To Be Frank (real name Frank Pescod) is back with his new EP “Broken”. After receiving a strong radio support with his previous works by BBC6 and Radio 1, “Broken” represents the next big step for Pescod’s career, whose great great grandfather was taught music by Chopin, no less! We had an interesting chat with him about music, life and what’s next.

Q: Who is your main inspiration?
A: I don’t really have one inspiration, I am in to a lot of different things aside from music like food and art that all inspires me and has an effect on the music I write. If you want me to name some inspiring people off the top of my head I would say Benjamin Zephaniah, David Hockney, Prince, Marvin Gaye, Timothy Spall, Thomas Heatherwick, Ron Fuller, Frank Prendergast, my parents, there is a lot more but that will do for now.

Q: How and when did you decide to become a professional musician?
A: I guess quite early on, I started writing songs when I was 15 in bands with friends, I then left school at 17 and left home with my 2 older brothers to be in a band all together in Oxford.
I had no idea what I was doing, I was really young but it was an amazing journey. I never looked back really after that.

to be frankQ: How do you write your songs?
A: Um well all sorts of ways really, it depends. I could have an idea lyrically and some words then I will try and find some music to work in with them.
Or I will find a riff on an instrument, usually a piano, synth or guitar then start to sing and write with it. Songs I think come to me rather me seeking them out if that makes sense.

Q: You recently released the new EP “Broken”. How was working on it and will this lead to a full album?
A: Yes I have just released my 3rd EP Broken which I am really pleased with, it was great to work on. I write a lot of songs so its nice to be able to keep putting things out. I co directed the video for broken with my good friend Andy Love, I am really pleased with how it came out as I had these thoughts in my head and Andy is just amazing at bringing it all to life! Yes I am going to do an album, I can’t say much more than that right now.

Q: Any chance for UK fans to see you performing live any time soon?
A: I hope so, I should be doing a few festivals this summer so stay tuned. Thanks for having me guys 🙂
