Groove supergroup Hellyeah blaze a trail of aggression with their newest release. Filthy, trudging riffs make these visceral anthems music for pulling angry faces and furious headbanging. Former Mudvayne singer Chad Gray spews his furious lyrics with a grit and ferocity to match the best, combined with the speedy, free-flowing delivery that made Mudvayne stand-out from the Nu Metal explosion of the late 90’s. Ex-Pantera drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott maintains his position as one of metal’s finest percussionists, with his signature groove and swing, reinforced by the truly beastly kick of the bass drums, which drive the punishing attitude of this album forwards. Ultimately, that is the word that surmises this album best; Attitude. It’s heavy, catchy, aggressive and driven, though some might find it a little too much of a good thing. Despite the lyric’s clear intentions as outlets for aggression, there’s nothing too outrageous or unique that can’t be found in bands such as Slipknot or Pantera, and it feels like a few of the riffs on the faster tracks rely a little too much on the open string. Though not a progressive work by any stretch, it’s a fine example of the sound of modern metal. A no-nonsense, balls-to-the-wall scorcher, with some thrilling fret-work and an attitude that calls for the clenching of fists and moshing of pits. Dimebag would approve.
